Coheed and Cambria pack Indy\’s Egyptian Room

Coheed and Cambria have one of the most diehard fans in all of rock. So it should come as no surprise that the Egyptian Room in Indy was packed almost to capacity when the band played the venue recently. They’re currently out on the road with You Blew It!, who kicked the show off for a crowd who’d shown up early to make sure they got a good spot for Coheed and Cambria. While their style is a bit different from Coheed, the crowd still loved every bit of the set. They took time to talk to the crowd in between songs and the banter back and forth was comical and entertaining but also the best part of their set. While the music was good, it just didn’t seem to fit well with Coheed and each song seemed to sound too similar to the last. The set changes were quick, with only 30 minutes in between bands. At just after 9 p.m., Coheed and Cambria took the stage as the crowd exploded before the band even played a note. With a 15 song set, the band didn’t waste any time getting right into things. Without much interaction with the crowd, they were able to blast through the set fairly quickly. What little they did talk with fans in between songs got nothing but overwhelming cheers in return. Watching frontman Claudio Sanchez on stage is pure awesomeness. Some songs he just stands centerstage at the mic and sings, while other songs he runs from one side of the stage to the other, strutting and moving like a man possessed. By the time the band finished the main portion of the set, the crowd knew it couldn’t be the end of the night and they were right. As the band returned to the stage, Sanchez pointed out a young girl in the crowd and asked if she was okay before they continued. It’s always fun when a band acknowledges what songs are coming and when Sanchez told the crowd “I just want to make sure everybody is okay. I mean, “Welcome Home” is GONNA happen,” the crowd erupted again before the band tore into “The Suffering” and “Ten Speed (Of God’s Blood and Burial)” and ended with “Welcome Home,” which featured a chilling sing-along anthem from the crowd toward the end- much like there had been during almost every song all night. Even if you aren’t a fan or familiar with Coheed and Cambria’s music, you’ll want to make sure you check them out on this tour. Whether it be on one of their headline dates or at a festival like Riot Fest in September, it’s an experience you won’t be able to get anywhere else. -Reggie Edwards [lg_slideshow folder=\”2015/Coheed and Cambria in Indy/\”]
