In This Moment, The Nearly Deads and Butcher Babies spill blood in Pittsburgh

Maria Brink and her band of the undead known as In This Moment are currently trekking their way across America for the band’s spring Black Widow Tour, leaving a trail of destruction in their epic wake.

Not only does the tour have a killer lineup including Butcher Babies, Upon A Burning Body and The Nearly Deads, but the band is also hitting all the major festivals along the way, including Northern Invasion, Rock On The Range and Rocklahoma, just to name a few.

The tour made a quick stop in Pittsburgh and the adoring fans didn’t miss their chance to see their favorite band live, turning out in droves, with no less than two dozen female fans dressed as the lovely and beguiling Ms. Brink at varying stages of her career as tribute of their undying devotion.

With a lineup like this, you know fans turned out for an evening of killer female fronted metal and The Nearly Deads did not disappoint, doing an amazing job and giving the fans exactly what they came for that night.

The band, who were an absolute blast to watch, was a slightly more alt/metal version of the Foo Fighters musically and lead singer Theresa Jeane is what you might get if Courtney Love and Kelly Clarkson were the victims of a horrible radiation accident that turned them into one evil superhero frontwoman.

Upon A Burning Body may have been the odd band out in terms of the vocalist’s gender that night, but it didn’t make them any less appealing to the fans or any less devastating, as they pounded out a pummeling set of brutal melodic hardcore with a vengeance.

The band’s performance was as powerful as the music that they play and lead singer Danny Leal held the crowd in the palm of his hand at all times. By the time they rounded out their powerhouse set with their version of “Deep in the Heart of Texas” and their cover of “Turn Down for What,” Leal, the band and everyone in attendance was a spent and sweaty mess.

You can drop that female fronted shit when it comes to Butcher Babies, those girls are metal as fuck and their band can go head to head with any male fronted metal band out there today. In fact, most would have their asses handed to them, so show some goddamn respect.

Both Carla Harvey and Heidi Shepherd have really mastered their lower register and their guttural growls would now make even the most hardened of hardcore or death metal fans say, “Holy Shit!”

Not to mention the energy level of their over the top performances. They owned every single inch of not just the stage, but the amps, barricades and security pit as well, only pausing at times to whip their heads into hair windmills powerful enough to generate electricity.

Their band is one of the heaviest and most solid bands in metal today and for just a trio make a shit ton of noise, but as always, all eyes were on the two charismatic and attention grabbing frontwomen.

Speaking of attention grabbing frontwomen, Maria Brink is one of the most electrifying performers in modern metal today, male or female and her band of undead zombies, lead by her partner in all things In This Moment from day one, Chris Howorth, are quite simply put, “A band that has to be seen to believe.”

The band goes out of their way to give fans a live experience unlike any other. One that harkens back to the days when guys like Alice Cooper put a show that guaranteed everyone there would get their monies worth and then some. Complete with smoke cannons alongside elaborate costume and set changes.

The show was also highlighted by Brink giving positive affirmations of self empowerment through the loudspeakers between songs and features dancing by two faceless women that is somewhat creepy and unsettling.

The bulk of the material was from Blood and Black Widow with the exception of “Into the Light,” “Fallen Heroes” and the hands down best version of “Closer” by Nine Inch Nails ever, before returning for the encore of “Blood” were they pulled out all the stops, choosing to end the show big, giving the fans a little more bang for their hard earned dollar, before sending them on their way home happy.
