A night of dancing goblins, gigantic arcade game machines, inflatable dragons, neon glasses, Celine Dion and Taylor Swift covers and animated heavy metal majesty descended upon Indianapolis.
When Dethklok announced they were hitting Indianapolis with Dragonforce and Nekrogoblikon on their Mutilation on a Spring Night tour, the show sold out almost immediately. The first two bands rarely hit Indy- if ever- so their fanbases were rabid to see them in the Circle City.
Nekrogoblikon kicked the night off early and, with new full-time singer Dickie Allen at the helm as an official member, the band sounded better than they ever have before. With goblin clean vocalist John Goblikon dancing around the stage, it was a party from the start and the fans were just as into it as the band.
Dragonforce was up next and the stage was adorned with giant inflatable dragons and massive arcade game machines- the latter of which the band members took stage standing on top of.
The band rarely tours in Indianapolis- often hitting Cincinnati, Chicago or Louisville so the Dragonforce fans were out in droves, ready to sing as loud as they could. And that’s exactly what they did, and just when you thought it couldn’t get any louder, the band hit the crowd with their covers of “My Heart Will Go On” and Taylor Swift’s “Wildest Dreams.”
Then came the final knockout punch of “Through the fire and Flames.” The circle pits were plenty in the Egyptian Room on this night and there was still one band left to go.
Dethklok wrapped the night up with a set that was based solely on production and the art of the music.
Watching Dethklok live is like watching Metalocalypse come to life in front of your eyes. The LED screen shows clips and footage from the series while the band is silhouetted and plays strictly in the shadows.
The band sounded stellar and the production was top-notch and the sold out Indianapolis crowd was entranced in every moment of the show- from the start of the opening credits scene and all the way through to the final notes.
Longtime Dethklok and Metalocalypse fans got to see the magic of the band coming to life in front of them and then got to see the songs they watched on the series for so many years, giving them an experience many never would have thought they would have.
