Review: ‘undertone’ is a grand slam and is in the early running for scariest movie of 2026

Sometimes the scariest things are those that we cannot see. Imagine knowing something is coming for you, but you can’t see it- you can only hear it- and there’s not a damn thing you can do about it.

In undertone, Evy is a skeptic podcaster, where she hosts the paranormal “Undertone Podcast” with her good friend Justin- who is in a completely different country and time zone, while she takes care of her dying mother at her mother’s house.

When Justin is sent a set of 10 audio recordings from a cryptic email address, they decide to cold listen to them live on the air and it’s all downhill from there. The recordings contain clips of a young couple- Mike and Jessa- who are going through some very serious and sinister experiences.

While it starts slow, as things from the recordings start to manifest themselves in Evy’s life, the movie gets increasingly suspenseful.

The film takes place in one setting- Evy’s mother’s house. When Evy leaves for the night to go to a party, we don’t see it. However, Graham Beasley’s cinematography is so impressive that you don’t realize it’s only one setting.

Often, the camera pans around, coming back to its original place, building the anticipation to a jump scare or scary moment that just doesn’t come, leaving your anticipation built.

As the audio clips get more intense and obvious that we’re listening to a possession, it starts getting scarier and creepier and the fact that the only characters we see on camera are Evy and her mother is just impressive.

Nina Kiri’s portrayal of Evy is realistic and captivating while the way Adam DiMarco plays Justin, solely as a voice role, is award-worthy with how believable and good the character is. Then there’s Keana Bastitas and Jeff Yung as Jessa & Mike- who are the perfect supporting cast and play their characters to perfection.

In the end, you won’t be able to look away as undertone is a grand slam and is in the early running for scariest movie of 2026, and it will be hard to knock off that spot.
